Tonight Nina took me to a concert by Joshua Redman's group as a birthday present. I will be 80 a week from tomorrow. Interestingly, masks and proof of vaccination are no longer required and we were OK w/ that. A few people in the audience wore masks, but the vast majority did not. Times have changed. The concert was incredible, far surpassing any expectations we might have had. The surprise highlight was a sumptuous singer, Gabrielle Cavassa. I had heard her on KCSM, on the group's latest record, but didn't put it together until he introduced the band and I recognized her name. The rest of the group, piano, bass and drums were also amazing and Redman himself, a product of Berkeley High, was charming as well as talented. It was a homecoming for him, as many of those in attendance knew him. The couple next to us had known him since he was a toddler. When the group took the stage someone in the audience called out "Welcome home!!". It was that kind of atmosphere. What took it to an entirely other level, though, was when he brought up Bobby McFerrin, who was sitting right behind us, w/ an over the top and entirely accurate introduction. Alan and I saw him at Zellerbach long before he was famous. Don't Worry, Be Happy is what made him famous, for those who don't know. Sitting behind us was a woman singing along intermittently, quietly, creatively, musically so it didn't annoy me. In retrospect I think it was Bobby, who has an amazing vocal range. Nina and I walked out feeling full of music. It was a generous concert. Almost all the songs were from their latest album, each song relating to a different place in the US, which I found a very engaging concept.

I recently went to the Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse with my beloved to see Jai Uttal & friends. Freight & Salvage is a non-profit and a lot volunteers help run it. All in all great organization and a nice small intimate venue to see music. Me and my beloved really enjoyed the kirtan and performance. Great evening. We will return.

Came here for a moth taping and this venue was great! The acoustics were excellent - we could clearly hear everyone. It fit a lot of people but didn't feel overwhelming. Everyone staffing the event were very nice and everything was labeled clearly so it made navigating the venue extremely easy. During intermission, everyone crowded to restrooms, fortunately, the venue has gender neutral bathrooms (and not single stalls either!) on the upstairs area that were clearly labeled and easy to get to.
